Washing Machine - to Repair or Not To Repair?
Washing machine manufacturers used to build them to last forever. That was a very important attraction for consumers.
They were buying appliances such as washing machines and dryers and actually accepting them as part of family.
Later manufacturers realised that building appliances able to last for long time can get producers out of business because customers return only after 20 or 25 years! They changed the marketing strategy.
Today we are sold washing machines that last for 5-10 years only but their attraction is new features. Are you familiar with front load washing machines, water saving washing machines, cold water only washing machines?
Believe me or not I have heard even about diagonal load washing machines!
To repair your washing machine or not?
Sooner or later your favourite washing machine will break. That may be a tough time for you decide if you want to repair it.
I had a story to tell about.
My washing machine broke down just 2 years after purchase. It was a humble power switch but after initial enquiries we realised that it is a fancy part and cost itself about $120 if provided by a washing machine repairer. After few more enquiries we purchased this part from a distributor for $65. We had to spend about 3 hours and keep some determination to actually get this part.
When the washing machine repairer arrived he insisted on transporting the washing machine unit to their factory and claimed a week for this job.
How can a family with kids can survive without a washing machine for a week?
Being very brave we invited our friend who understands something in electrical appliances. He managed to replace the part just in 30 minutes. We had a happy dinner with wine afterwards.
I would never recommend this practice to anyone - because it is too risky. A lot of things can go wrong, so you will lose time, money and peace of mind.
If your washing machine stopped use this plan:
- call your local washing machine repairer
- get a firm quote and timeframe
- based on the quote calculate how many years it would cover
Example: if your washing machine is 9 years old its remaining life time is about 1 year. If cost of repair is $250 it covers for 2 years only. I would say - not worth it.
If you are unlucky to have a 2-3 years old washing machine - go for it. In fact according to the theory most of typical break downs occur in first 3 years of operation.
Good luck!
